Larsen uses foreshadowing here. Not only does Clare attend more than just this party with Irene, but a terrible amount of harm does come from Clare's presence in the lives of the Redfields: the presumed affair between Clare and Brian, Clare's secret being discovered by Mr. Bellew, and, finally, Clare's death.
