This suspicion about Clare contradicts everything Irene has thought about her before this moment and will say afterwards, but because Irene is a flawed and biased narrorator, perhaps we should count this as one of the most accurate insights into Clare's character that we have. Not denying the fact that Clare is a selfish character, she clearly has very strong motivations for her actions, otherwise she would not be so persistent.
